Afternoon Tea at Kyloe

Those who know me well, know that I enjoy nothing more than an outing for afternoon tea. I adore the combination of sweet and savoury accompanied by a cup of tea. Over the years, I have worked my way around some of Edinburgh’s loveliest spots for afternoon tea, so when Kyloe invited me to try their new afternoon tea I was delighted! At first, I was apprehensive as Kyloe is known for delicious gourmet steak, and as you may or not know I do not eat meat. But they assured me it would not be a problem, as they have a vegetarian menu and little did I know at the time what a treat was in store for me!

On a rather windy, rainy, and sunny (yes, a great example of a Scottish summer) Wednesday, my mum and I entered Kyloe. To my delight they seated us by the window – which has a lovely view of Princes Street and Edinburgh Castle – and we were given one vegetarian menu and one regular menu. After choosing our teas we eagerly awaited the first course.Before our assorted savouries arrived two adorable glass bottles of strawberry and mint milkshakes were brought out for us to sample (picture below).

After finishing the milkshakes, we couldn't wait to see what else was in store for us. We didn't have to wait long to find out as we soon observed a waitress carrying over a wooden crate, which held our assorted savouries.

The assorted savouries for the regular afternoon tea consisted of: Gin salmon on crispbread, Bee’s Dad’s Beef Focaccia (which was my mum’s personal favourite), Cheese and Pickle Toastie, Pulled Lamb Sausage Roll and a Mini English Muffin with Duck Pastrami and Quail Egg.

The vegetarian assorted savouries consisted of: Rye Crispbread with Beetroot Cream Cheese, Roast Vegetables on Brioche, Cheese and Pickle Toastie, Rosemary Focaccia, and a Mini English Muffin with Quail egg and Falafel (my personal favourite).

Overall, this was my favourite round. I was extremely impressed with the creativity displayed in the vegetarian option. Someone once told me that despite not being vegetarian, he always judged a restaurant on their creativity with the vegetarian dishes, and I think Kyloe is the perfect example of a restaurant striving to create vegetarian meals which are equally delicious in comparison to their regular dishes. Furthermore, my mum assured me that the regular savouries were delicious too and of very good quality.

 Sorbet Palate Cleanser

After we had finished the selection of savouries, we were asked to choose between three flavours of sorbet as a palate cleanser. My mum and I opted for the strawberry & mint and the blood orange. I thought this was a lovely way to introduce the sweet portion of the afternoon tea - plus the dark chocolate which came with the sorbet was delicious too!

The selection of fine delights consisted of: A Gin and Grapefruit Drizzle Cake, Nutella and White Chocolate Muffin, Malted Milk Doughnut and Freshly Baked Scones with Clotted Cream and Plum Jam. 

I was interested to see quite a contrast between the savouries and sweet selections. I felt the items in the savoury round were displayed quite decoratively and the sweet round looked equally as delicious but had a more homemade quality to it - reminiscent of what my grandmother and I would have attempted to bake. 
By this stage, my mum and I were feeling pretty full so I admit we only managed to eat half of the treats and asked to take the rest home. 

Verdict
Having never been to Kyloe, my visit for afternoon tea was the perfect introduction, and I would happily return to try their lunch or dinner! So if you're looking for an afternoon tea with a bit of quirky twist, I would highly recommend Kyloe!
